Each one shows + / 0 / −. Add the four together and that's your roll.
The four together land between −4 and +4. That total shifts your skill up or down, and where it lands is what happened.
EpicRoll rolls four Fudge dice. Each one reads plus, zero or minus, and they are summed, so a throw lands between minus four and plus four with most results near the middle. The total is compared against how hard the thing is, and the comparison produces one of four outcomes: a critical failure, a failure, a success, or a critical success. The player is never shown a margin, only which of the four they got.

You never have to work out what a number means. How good you are and how hard the task is are both plain words, and Good beats Fair exactly the way it sounds.
The middle rung of that ladder, meaning three different things:
Only your worst wound counts. The rest stay with you anyway.
Wounds don't stack. You collect them, and only the worst one counts. Heal that one and the next one down becomes what defines you.
The lanes have names, not numbers. Nobody has to explain what Very Hurt means.
